Healthy Eating Mediterranean Style – The Magic of Olive Oil

Generous on olive oil, the Mediterranean Diet is believed to be a healthy diet apparently because it advocates daily consumption of healthy foods and olive oil.


Mediterranean diet is patterned after the general diet adapted by people living in the Mediterranean region, which includes Spain, Italy and Greece. Because of differences in culture among these countries, availability of food products and preferences in diet, this weight-loss plan involves a wide range of eating practices. Nonetheless, they agree on one thing-the use of olive oil.


Olive oil comes from olives. It contains all the natural properties, vitamins, nutrients, minerals and taste of its source. Thus, all the benefits that may be with the fruit can also be acquired from using its oil, with one remarkable benefit though–variety. Unlike the fruit, the oil can be used in nearly all types of food preparations, from salads to casseroles.


There are many benefits to ingesting this oil. For one, it is packed with monounsaturated fatty acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids have been recorded in some research and medical papers as good protections against a host of chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.


As much as 85% of monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil are composed of oleic acid. This mainly benefits the heart and the arteries as well as provides protection against cancer cell formation by “weakening” an oncogene. It is also attributed to triggering self-destruction among treatment-resistant cancer cells. Oleic acid also protects colon cells from carcinogens, specifically those that are formed during preparation of meats.


This vegetable oil is also a good source of antioxidative substances that prevent free radicals from triggering premature aging among cells.


Mediterranean diet is good not only because it is high in olive oil. It is also healthy down to its core as it advocates consumption of plenty of vegetables and fruits while trimming down consumption of highly processed foods.
