Ways to Improve Snoring
Snoring is not only an annoying habit, but it is also one that can be very detrimental to your health and the health of your partner. Snoring can prevent the body from ever reaching a level of deep sleep, which can lead to chronic fatigue and constant “brain fog”. If you only snore occasionally, then you will probably be able to function just fine the next day. However, if you snore constantly, then you should take steps to increase your quality of sleep by reducing your snoring.
Who Is Most at Risk for Snoring?
Snoring is a very common condition that affects a large portion of the population, but it is even more common for men and women who are overweight. Snoring also tends to become worse as a person ages. When individuals become overweight, they develop a problem that is often referred to as “bulky throat”. This simply refers to the excessive fat and bulk that is stored in the throat and affects a person’s ability to breathe easily. The airway becomes further restricted when the person lies down, which is why snoring only affects people while they sleep.
Snoring can also be related to poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat. When the tongue and throat muscles relax during sleep, they sometimes fall backwards and block the airway, which can cause snoring. Sometimes the muscles in the tongue and throat can become too relaxed due to side effects of some sleeping pills, alcohol consumption, or genetics.
How to Improve Snoring
If snoring is caused by excessive weight, it can be improved by losing weight and keeping it off. Individuals who participate in crash diets and lose significant amounts of weight but then gain it all back will likely experience snoring again as soon as the weight is regained. In order to improve snoring permanently, it is important to make permanent lifestyle changes.
Dietary Changes
A healthy diet is an essential piece of the weight-loss puzzle, especially if you want to keep the weight off for the rest of your life. Eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and healthy grains is important for long-term weight loss and healthy sleep patterns. If your diet is currently rich in empty carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, it is time to make a change if you want to improve your sleep.
Exercise
In addition to a healthy diet, exercise can help you get rid of excess weight that is causing your snoring issues. Cardiovascular exercises in conjunction with weight training are important for optimal physical health and wellness.
