STUNNING TV host Jasmine Harman is normally a natural in front of
the camera.
But the 34-year-old presenter of Channel Four’s A Place In The
Sun, which returns to our screens next week, was frozen with fear after
she stripped off for a naked photo shoot for charity.
She was determined to do it though, particularly after a fan had
recently asked Jasmine if she was expecting – when she was decidely
un-pregnant.
Jasmine said: “The fan asked if I was expecting a happy event.
I’m not pregnant, so at first I was upset. I love my food. I like a
good man-sized portion of food.
“My weight goes up and down. I’m tall and I’ll never
be a size zero.”
The less than complimentary remark came during filming for the tv
show in Italy and America.
Jetting around the world finding new homes for Brits may be a dream
job, but it meant Jasmine had piled on the pounds.
The 5ft 9in presenter says her love for cheese, risotto and fine
wine caught up with her and she tipped the scales at 11st 3oz.
And although now toned, tanned and in great shape for summer,
Jasmine reveals signing up for the Cancer Research Give Up Clothes for
Good campaign was daunting.
She said: “I was so nervous about stripping for the photo
shoot, I couldn’t string a sentence together.”
“I’m not fussed about nudity. I don’t know why I was
so shocked. I was sweating and I felt sick.
“The photographer was great, though and put me at ease. He
sent everyone else out of the room which helped to overcome my nerves,
but it was horrible.”
Her confidence to bare all for the nation was boosted after she
dropped from a size 14 to a svelte size 10. She’s the cover star of
July’s Weight Watcher magazine after using their diet advice to
slim to 9st 12oz.
But her husband Jon Boast thought the celebrity shoot to encourage
people to donate old clothes to charity was a bit cheeky.
The TV cameraman she married last June after meeting on the set of
A Place In The Sun, would have preferred if she’d left more to the
imagination.
Jasmine said: “My husband was mortified. I’d told is him
I was going to do it but when he saw the pictures, he said, ‘but
your whole bum is on display. He was like, ‘no I don’t want
everyone else seeing your bum.’ They sent me the original photos so
I could choose my favourite. All they did, I think, was even out my skin
tone with airbrushing. I thought I looked alright. I was quite amazed,
actually.”
When the pregnancy remark was made, Jasmine admitted she had
stopped paying attention to what she was eating and drinking.
She said: “I thought, ‘I need to get back on top of
this’. I don’t feel as confident and sexy when I feel bloated
and heavy. I hate feeling uncomfortable in my clothes. I look at myself
on camera and I know my weight goes up and down. I’m tall and a
size 10 is where I’m happiest, although my body wants to gravitate towards a size 12.
“I wouldn’t mind losing a couple more pounds but I feel a
lot more confident. It’s great as I can fit in to clothes I
haven’t been able to get into for ages.”
Exercise is a big secret to Jasmine’s weight loss and in
particular, tough training for the approaching Shock Absorber women-only
triathlon.
A trained fitness instructor before she was chosen to present A
Place In The Sun five years ago, the triathlon will be a chance for
Jasmine to return to fitness.
The gruelling event in London on July 3 for Breast Cancer Care
means Jasmine will swim 200m across Dorney Lake, a venue for the 2012
Olympic games, then cycle for five km, followed by a final 2.5km run.
Jasmine said: “I’ve been told to put a banana down my
triathlon suit to prevent chafing, but I think I’d rather run the
risk than look like a drag queen!
“I’ve never done a triathlon before. I can’t really
swim very well. I don’t like putting my face in the water. I
don’t think I’ll sink but I’m not a good swimmer, or that
good on a bike. I’m not a natural runner either. But Breast Cancer
Care is an amazing charity and we all need to be breast aware. The
triathlon is a psychological motivation. It’s great to have a
target and even better if it is helping other people, too. That gives me
double motivation and at least two good reasons to finish.”
Cheering from the side lines will be Jasmine’s husband, Jon,
30.
The day after the fifth series of A Place in the Sun: Home or Away
starts, the couple plan to escape for the night to a luxury hotel to
celebrate their first wedding anniversary. The sun shone on their Surrey
wedding last June which was an elaborate affair with six bridesmaids and
six page boys.
Jasmine said: “Of course the sun was shining. I said,
‘listen I’m the presenter of a Place in the Sun. Naturally the
sun is going to shine on my wedding day’. And it did. That was the
power of positive thinking. The wedding was amazing. It was so lovely to
have all our friends, family and loved ones together.”
Jasmine says she is loving married life, although she teased her
husband after he was stuck in Malaysia working after the flight ban
caused by the ash cloud in Iceland. She said: “He was filming in a
show with a group of models. I was a bit put out that he was stuck by a
pool with a load of gorgeous women, so I took the mickey out of
him.”
The couple have no plans to start a family just yet. Instead, they
dote on their one-year-old Bernese mountain dog, Shadow, which shares
their home in London.
Jasmine is in Liguria, Italy for the series’ start.
She said: “I love being able to follow the sunshine around.
The most rewarding aspect is helping people to realise a dream.
It’s life changing for them. We visit beautiful places. Getting to
try wonderful food is great, too. The show is so successful because as
nation we love sunshine, travel and property. It’s a good formula.
“There are a lot of nice shows to look forward to. I’ll
be fat in some, thinner in others, but happy in all of them.”
The new series of A Place in the Sun: Home or Away is on Friday
June 18 on Channel 4 at 7.30pm.
Jasmine is taking part in the Shock Absorber Women Only triathlon
on July 3 to raise cash for Breast Cancer Care.
