Dr. Oz: Elimination Diet causes rapid weight loss and zaps food allergies

Dr. Oz says many people are unaware they have hidden food allergies that are causing weight gain, headaches, bloating, and joint pain.

On the Nov. 13 episode of his show, Dr. Oz revealed how to identify hidden food allergies and how to accelerate weight loss on an “Elimination Diet.”

“Did you know that headaches, fatigue, and weight gain could be an allergic reaction to food?” he asked.

Dr. Oz said most people are familiar with common conditions such as dust allergies, but said subtle signs such as weight gain, brain fog, and fatigue are clues to hidden food allergies that are making you sick and fat.

The symptoms of food allergies include the following:

  • Bloating.

  • Joint pain.

  • Cravings for certain foods such as french fries and pasta.

  • Congestion.

  • Skin rashes.

Surprisingly, Dr. Oz said the most common food allergies are to eggs, corn, tomatoes, soy, and oranges. Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Ultrasimple Diet: Kick-Start Your Metabolism, recommended a three-step Elimination Diet to identify food sensitivities.

Elimination Diet Meal Plan

The first phase, which Dr. Hyman called the “Prep Phase,” involves a two-day diet that eliminates caffeine and processed foods.

In the second phase, which Hyman called the “Five-Day Cleanse Phase,” we should detoxify our bodies by eating three meals and two snacks a day consisting of the following menu:

  • Breakfast: Brown-rice cereal, berries, almonds, pumpkin seeds and green tea.

  • Morning snack: An apple and some almonds.

  • Lunch: Chicken or fish with brown rice and green vegetables.

  • Afternoon snack: Almonds and green tea.

  • Dinner: Same as lunch.

Dr. Hyman told Dr. Oz the cleanse phase can be difficult because your body might still crave some of the foods you’re used to eating, but gradually those cravings should fade.

Hyman also said most people will lose weight during this five-day phase (one woman lost 7 pounds) and will feel a lot better, with less joint pain, fewer headaches, and significantly less bloating.

In the third phase, which Dr. Hyman called the “Sensitivity Reintroduction and Diagnosis Phase,” you should begin incorporating the foods you previously eliminated from your diet (preferably one food at a time, such as corn) and see how you feel.

He said the best way to test this is to eat that food at every meal and then gauge your body’s reaction. After you incorporate one food, you should do the same with another food, such as tomatoes. Over time, you’ll be able to identify which foods you’re allergic to based on how you feel after you eat it.

“Good food is good medicine that can prevent, reverse, and even cure disease,” said Hyman. “Take away the bad food, put in the good food, and magic happens.”

Dr. Hyman revealed how to enjoy rapid weight loss and detoxify your body in his new book, The 10-Day Detox Diet.
