Bronx, NY (PRWEB) December 24, 2014
The holiday season is here, and with it tends to come a few too many sugary treats and too little physical activity. November might have been National Diabetes Month, but the awareness shouldn’t stop there. Riverdale Urgent Care urges everyone to stop by the center this month for a simple diabetic screening. The center is also sharing valuable tips this season on how to prevent diabetes and who is most at risk of getting the disease.
The first thing to understand about diabetes is its prevalence. Two out of every five Americans will develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. Over a third of U.S. adults have pre-diabetes, in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal. Those who are at increased risk for the disease are over age 45, are overweight, have a close relative with diabetes, have a Latino or African-American background, or are physically active less than three times a week.
Important steps for prevention include regular exercise and a higher consumption of healthy foods, such as fiber and whole grains. This should help contribute to a third important step, which is weight loss (preferably at least 5-7 percent of body weight). Also, avoid low-carb and “fad” diets, since their effectiveness at preventing diabetes is unknown.
Knowing whether one is at higher risk for diabetes and how to prevent it is extremely important. If left untreated, the disease can lead to complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, sight and hearing damage, and skin problems. Some complications can be life-threatening. Don’t wait until it’s time for New Year’s resolutions to make a change. Riverdale Urgent Care urges everyone to get started on a healthier path today.
