Mediterranean Cuisine And Weight Loss

The process of losing weight does not have to be about starvation, limitations, and bland food. The Mediterranean lifestyle follows a diet rich in heart healthy foods that are not only good for the body, but also make a person feel good inside and look radiant outside. Incorporating the diet with some daily activity will result in weight loss, a healthier heart, and a positive, feel-good attitude.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. One of the key elements is consuming these foods in their raw state whenever possible. The more something has been processed the less nutritional value it will have, so freshness is the key.

Portion control is another key component to enjoying Mediterranean cuisine. Those who follow this lifestyle believe in quality over quantity. Enjoying delicious food while amongst friends and family is an important aspect to the Mediterranean lifestyle, but it should be done in moderation. It is acceptable to consume treats like dark chocolate, but not on a large scale. Allowing treats will also reduce the risk of binging because the body will not feel deprived.

Another reason the Mediterranean diet works is because it does not limit the fat intake like other diets. Instead it focuses on incorporating healthy fats which are crucial to heart health and also help a person feel full and not deprived. Sources of healthy fats are salmon, avocado, and olive oil. Cooking with olive oil is one of the basic and most important fundamentals of Mediterranean cuisine.

It is also believed that eating more plant derived products instead of animal foods decreases the occurrence of such conditions as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. The body is able to process and digest plant based foods much easier than animal products. Again, freshness is vital. It is recommended to eat produce that is in season and locally grown for the best benefits.

Following a diet that is restrictive in calories, fat, and carbohydrate intake can often lead to weight loss, but it will not be a lasting weight loss. Often the pounds lost are regained and maybe even a few pounds more along with them. It is also hard to dine out socially when on a restrictive diet. Focusing on what a person can’t have instead of what they can often leads to frustration and can end up ruining a nice evening out.

The good thing about following the Mediterranean lifestyle is that finding entrees in a restaurant that incorporate the basics of the Mediterranean diet is easily done. Grilled salmon, seafood, and vegetables are often on most menus. It is also encouraged to enjoy a glass of red wine every now and then. There are not many other diets that allow for consumption of alcohol.

It is believed that enjoying food with others helps lay the foundation for a healthy relationship with food. Associating joy and acceptance with delicious and nutritious foods sets people up for feeling fulfilled physically and emotionally. As the old saying goes, eat, drink, and be merry!
