NASCAR 101: Field expands for Sprint Unlimited in 2015

NASCAR recently announced another change to its ever-changing eligibility requirements for the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway on February 14th. Formerly a pole-winners-only race in its days as the Busch Clash, the 2015 edition will feature all 16 Chase-qualified drivers from 2014 as well as 2014 Coors Light Pole Award winners, former Sprint Unlimited race winners and any Daytona 500 pole winners who competed in the Cup Series full time in 2014. The 75-lap, non-points race kicks off the Sprint Cup Series season.

A minimum of 25 Cup Series drivers are eligible to participate in the Sprint Unlimited, with remaining spots up to 25 being filled by drivers highest in 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver championship points who are not already eligible.

“The 2015 Sprint Unlimited has potential to be one of the most competitive ever,” said NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell. “With more drivers eligible, the intensity level increases for our fans and competitors, making for a compelling start to the 2015 season.”
