Dr. Travis dishes Doctor's Diet weight loss tips: Dark chocolate mousse recipe

Host of “The Doctors,” Dr. Travis Stork believes in using food as medicine. But, as he revealed on the Sept. 16 episode of the show, that doesn’t mean feeling deprived. Dr. Travis offered tips from his Doctor’s Diet weight loss plan and revealed the surprising secret ingredient that turns chocolate mousse into a slimming, healthy dessert.

Dr. Travis is the author of “The Doctor’s Diet: Dr. Travis Stork’s STAT Program to Help You Lose Weight & Restore Your Health.” He emphasized that many people think the key to weight loss is restricting the amount of food. Wrong. He believes that by learning to choose the right foods, you can actually eat more food while boosting your weight loss. In addition, he advises learning to make quick, easy recipes that you can rely on when you’re in a time crunch.

For example, Dr. Travis created the recipe below to satisfy chocolate cravings. It takes less than five minutes and uses a secret ingredient: Avocado. Because avocado contains fiber and healthy fats, it will keep you full and curb cravings for those times when you’re on the couch watching TV at night.

When it comes to weight loss, Dr. Travis designed the Doctor’s Diet to begin with a quick-start phase that he calls STAT. It features generous amounts of protein and vegetables while restricting carbohydrates and eliminating sugar. The low-carb STAT phase reflects the latest research showing that low carb diets are more effective for weight loss than low-fat plans.

A new study disclosed that low carb diets do more than boost weight loss. They also are better for heart health. In addition, the high fat dairy allowed on low carb diets helps to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, reported Forbes on Sept. 15.

The research revealed that those who indulged in high fat dairy foods such as whole milk and cream reduced their risk of type 2 diabetes by 23 percent compared to those who ate only one portion daily. Study participants who consumed low-fat dairy did not experience the same benefits.

The latest study supports the findings from other researchers showing that fat is not the enemy when it comes to weight loss and health. The recipe below from Dr. Travis provides healthy fats in the form of avocado and milk.

Dark Chocolate Mousse recipe to make four servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized, ripe avocados, cut in half, pit removed, and flesh scooped out

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/3 cup honey or pure maple syrup, or to taste

  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy, almond, or other nut-based)

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions: In a food processor, combine all ingredients and process until silky smooth and creamy, about 3 to 4 minutes, scraping the side of the machine once or twice, as needed. Spoon into bowls, cover, and refrigerate until cold before serving. Mousse will keep, covered and refrigerated, for up to three days.
