Kurland Hotel, Plettenberg Bay

Kurland, is set in fabulous surroundings on South Africa’s Garden Route just on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay.

Kurland Hotel is simply stunning and is an excellent choice as part of any South Africa holiday. As soon as you turn off the main road you are greeted by the gatehouse keeper who will wave you down the long gravel driveway to the reception buildings of the estate.

The estate in which Kurland quietly sits was purchased 50 years ago by the Behr family who, in more recent years have sympathetically altered this family homestead into a luxury boutique hotel. This change has been a complete success as the hotel has retained all of its wealth of character and warmth of a family home. The staff to guest ratio here creates a very personalised stay, with families especially being well catered for. The hosts are superb at ensuring your stay is second to none and the chef and kitchen staff offer an exceptional menu which is always adjustable to taste.

The decor at Kurland is sensitive to the estates heyday and every piece is exceptional in character and is admired as you walk through the rooms. With large roaring log fires in the library and drawing room in the cooler months or an elegant terrace overlooking the estate on which to sit and relax in the summer evenings Kurland is a home from home.

Each suite at Kurland is exceptional, with large four poster beds, chandeliers, grand open fireplaces, and lounge areas. In addition to the children’s loft rooms upstairs that are kitted out with lovely single beds adorned with teddies and soft duvets. In the loft room you will also find a free standing (child size) claw footed bath, dressing gowns, vanity units and of course a large toy box over spilling at the edges. The suites at Kurland are unfaultable.

Throughout Kurland’s estate there are many opportunities for active pursuits such as horse riding, walking or quad biking there is also a fabulous Spa offering a variety of treatments and an attractive playroom for children stocked with many toys, board games and activities. In the surrounding area there are beautiful beaches where you can see the bottle nosed Dolphin and the Southern Right Whale which calves along this coastline. There is also the nearby Monkey Sanctuary where you can be guided through the forest coming across various species of Monkey that your guide will impart knowledge on.

For bird lovers there is the Birds of Eden sanctuary where there is everything from Flamingoes to Scarlet Ibis which has such a vibrant red to its feather it stands out almost with a glow. If its water sports that you are interested in there are the nearby Keurbooms River Nature Reserve where there is a river boat, and opportunities for water skiing and canoeing. Of course along the river there are plenty of picnic spots and Kurland are only too happy to pack a sumptuous picnic for you if you so wish.

Plettenberg Bay itself is perfect for Hobie Cat Sailing and surfing, whilst there is an underwater Dive Trail on Plettenberg’s central beach. For activities on land there are plenty of nature walks, hiking trails, nearby craft villages and golf courses to spend time on. Kurland Hotel works especially well when combined with Kwandwe or the Madikwe for a malaria free family safari holiday.

A stay at Kurland can be as relaxed or as active as you like, but one thing will remain constant and that is the superb service and sumptuous surroundings that you return to each evening.
