Amber Fort is located at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. It served as the citadel of Kachhawa clan till the time they decided to make Jaipur their new capital. The original fort was a part of the Jaigarh Fort and linked to it via fortified passages.
It was built by the Meenas who are considered the original inhabitants of the region. The construction of the palace complex that we see today was initiated by Raja Man Singh. Amber Fort or Amer Fort as it is also known as reflects a fine amalgamation of Hindu and Muslim style of architecture. The Fort is built of red and white sandstone.
Don’t go by its rugged exteriors as this gives way to very elegant and ornamental interiors. There are murals, frescoes, paintings, carvings, mosaic and mirror work that provide the interior walls a rich look. The fort is segregated into four part each of which can be reached through a staircase from a central part. The main entrance of the fort, Surajpol, leads to the main courtyard Jaleb Chowk.
The staircase to the palace is located at the Jaleb Chowk and just before it are the stairs that guide you to the famous Kali Mata Temple. There is an interesting story behind the construction of the temple which you can know while on a trip to the temple. Apart from this, the Diwan – i – Am, Ganesh Pol, Sheesh Mahal, Jas Mandir, Dil-e-Aaram’ Garden also draw lot of observing eyes. The most exciting aspect today of visiting this is the chance to ride an elephant upto the fort. It makes you feel like a king of the royal era who is fast approaching his kingdom.
