Acid Reflux and Pregnancy – 5 Tips to Reduce Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux and pregnancy seem to go hand in hand that’s because a woman’s body undergoes a variety of changes while pregnant. While being pregnant is a very exciting time there are also issues surrounding acid reflux which can make pregnancy difficult to completely enjoy.

Why Woman get Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

Hormones change during pregnancy and present a situation where a woman produces more acid in the stomach. Since pregnant women will eat more than prior to their pregnancy, they will continue to produce even more of these hormones. A combination of these hormones can result in a portion of the acid moving through the esophagus. Upwards of 25% of all pregnant women must deal with heartburn every day of the pregnancy. This makes it harder for them to focus on a daily routine or even to get enough sleep.

Along the progression of the pregnancy, additional pressure is placed on the abdominal region. This can lead to acid moving further into the esophagus area. As a result, the bulk of pregnant women will discover heartburn increasing during the final months of the pregnancy.

Acid Reflux and Pregnancy Tips

1- Keep Fruit Intake at a Minimum

All women will want their babies to be as healthy as possible. Thankfully, there are natural ways to alleviate the acid reflux in the body during the pregnancy is critical. Eating a great deal of fresh fruit can lead to a vast increase of unhealthy acid content in the stomach. If you find and increase of acid reflux while eating fruit then it is best to keep it at a minimum

2- Eat Smaller meals More Frequently

It is usually best to eat six small meals on a daily basis so hunger is not a daily issue. The body can digest smaller meals in a manner that is easier than large ones. Consuming large amounts of water during the day is not a bad idea either since it will help keep you hydrated. Liquids also contribute to the ability to digest food in a better manner.

3- Do not Eat Late at Night

Do not eat late at night as this can lead to heartburn problems throughout the night. Give your body at least 2 hours to digest your food before retiring for the Night.

4- Elevate Your Head and Torso When Lying down

Elevate the head and shoulders anytime you sleep. This prevents acid from going into the esophagus throughout the night or when you try to rest during the day. Special pillows exist for this and it is possible to stack two or more of them. It is possible for someone to elevate the head of the bed with boards to achieve the same result.

5- Try Lying on Your Left Side When Sleeping

Try to lie on your left side as well since this will lead to a reduction of the acid in the stomach. When lying on your right side or on your back, acid reflux will increase. This may not always be comfortable when you are pregnant but you should get into such a routine. This will reduce the potential of dealing with acid reflux.

Following these guidelines will allow you to offset acid reflux during a pregnancy. Dealing with severe heartburn problems is certainly not a great deal of fun and it is also unhealthy.
