Business Marketing – How Can I Know How My Competitors Are Reacting to My Moves?

This is a very broad question. Do you want to know:

- how to spy on your competition?

– how to identify competitors who are duplicating your ideas so that you can sue them?

Most business owners do not have the time or money or energy to support these two defensive strategies, not to mention the time and money required for litigation.

Besides you have very little control over what your competitors will and won’t do.

Therefore, I suggest you focus on what you can control.

Instead of spending your time and money focused on finding competitors you can punish through lawsuits, which is a very defensive approach because you are not producing anything of value from that time and money.

Instead, go on the offensive.

Focus on out-innovating and out-marketing your competition.

Focus on being one or two steps ahead of your competition.

Assume they will duplicate you.

Some will steal your best ideas.

Some will steal your worst ideas.

They may take some of your ideas and improve upon them. So what?

Make peace with that and move on.

Focus on out-innovating and out-marketing your competition by following these three steps:

1. Innovate

2. Create a dialogue

3. Be different

INNOVATE

If you innovate faster than your competitor does, you will never need to worry about what your competitor does.

What do they say? Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Assume the leader position in your market. Let your competitors follow you.

Be on the offensive, not on the defensive.

CREATE A DIALOGUE

How can you maintain a leader position in your market and innovate faster than your competitors?

The answer is “create a dialogue” with your customers.

Always “ask” your customer, don’t “tell” your customer.

Survey your customers. Create Ask Campaigns to find out your customer’s biggest pain and biggest problems.

Then create products and services to solve and prevent those problems.

If you create a dialogue with your customers they will drive past your competition to do business with you. I drive past 10 dentist offices to get to my dentist because I have a relationship with my dentist. Do you have a relationship with your customers?

Your competition is focused on duplicating what others are doing which is tell-based marketing. They create a product and they tell their prospects and customers to buy what they are selling. No dialogue. No relationship. No connection.

BE DIFFERENT

Most businesses don’t know how to effectively market their business so they spend their time duplicating what others are doing.

As a result every business in a market tends to look like everyone else in the market. All the customer sees is a lot of sameness. Why should they pick one business over another when they all look the same? Why should they drive past 10 of your competitors to do business with you? How can you as a business owner make your business stand out in a world of sameness?

The answer: Be different. Be remarkable. Be a leader.

If you create a dialogue you will be different. You will be remarkable. You will be a leader. You will know things your competition can only guess at.

Take the guesswork out of marketing. Take the guesswork out of innovating.

Create a dialogue by running an Ask Campaign. Survey your customers. Ask questions.

Don’t waste your time worrying about your competitors reacting to your moves.

Let your competition waste their time reacting to you, while you spend your time innovating, creating dialogue, and being different.
