Herndon, Va (PRWEB) November 17, 2014
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called the nation’s problem of lack of sleep a public health epidemic. In January, the CDC published an article on the problem which states that “sleep is increasingly recognized as important to public health, with sleep insufficiency linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors.” It noted that an estimated 50-70 million US adults have sleep or wakefulness disorders including obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. Dr. Marcos Grande of Grande Dental Care is keenly aware of the situation and is specially trained in the field of sleep disorders dentistry. He is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and now provides the latest high tech treatment for OSA.
“Being tired all the time is a serious health concern, not something that is normal,” explains Dr. Grande. “The number of severe health problems associated with sleep disorders such as OSA is staggering. They include high blood pressure leading to heart attacks and strokes, serious headaches, diabetes, sexual dysfunction, acid reflux and weight gain. To combat this health problem, I ensure our clinic is always on the cutting edge of the latest non-surgical treatment technology which right now is a system that provides oxygen to the body during the night through a custom-made mouthpiece.”
OSA is a condition which occurs during sleep when an individual stops breathing for many short periods of time during the night. This happens because the tongue falls back in the mouth and closes off the throat airway until the body reacts and gasps for air. These periods of oxygen starvation can occur many hundreds of times a night with each one lasting anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute. It is this cumulative oxygen starvation that causes the associated health problems.
OSA is associated with snoring and all individuals with OSA snore even though not all snorers have OSA.
Grande Dental Care can now provide OSA suffers with the Full Breath Solution O2 mouthpiece. This treatment modality has the ability to provide pure oxygen to the patient during the night directly through a custom mouthpiece. The purpose is to overcome the health problems associated from OSA oxygen starvation by providing a supply of oxygen directly to the individual. The FBS sleep appliance also works by depressing the tongue rather than pushing the jaw forward as the majority of mouthpieces are designed to do.
“Such treatment is not the first line of defense against OSA,” further explains Dr. Grande. “We first have to go through all the diagnostic steps which includes a sleep study and consultation with a sleep physician to provide the final diagnosis. Then we go over treatment options including CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) therapy. If this doesn’t work for the person, we then look at a custom intra-oral mouthpiece that will hold the teeth and jaw in a position to prevent the tongue from falling back during sleep and thus preventing the apnea. This new treatment would be considered at that time.”
