Throat cancer refers to cancerous tumors that develop in your throat. It has different names, depending on what part of the throat is affected. The throat is a muscular tube that begins behind your nose and ends in your neck. The voice box is just below the throat and is also susceptible to throat cancer. Change in voice is often the first sign of throat cancer, since vocal cords are the first part within which the cancer will develop. It can also affect the epiglottis.
The primary parts of throat are:
• Pharynx: A hollow tube inside the neck that starts behinds the neck and ends at the top of the esophagus and windpipe.
• Larynx: The “voice box” sits just below the throat, and is made of cartilage which contains the vocal cord.
• Epiglottis: Acts as a lid to the windpipe halts food and beverage from flowing into the trachea.
• Trachea: A pathway or tube that allows passage of air to your lungs.
• Esophagus: A muscular tube that allows passage of food and beverages to your stomach/abdomen.
• Tonsils: They are located on the back of the throat.
Causes of throat cancer:
• Chronic Smoking
• Chewing tobacco
• Drinking too much alcohol.
• Lacking of fruits and vegetables in a diet.
• Human papilloma virus (HPV).
Symptoms:
• Difficulty in swallowing.
• Painful swallowing.
• Trouble in breathing.
• Trouble in breathing.
• Pain or ringing in the ears.
• Frequent headaches.
• Lump in the throat.
• Weight loss for no reason.
• Bleeding from the throat.
These symptoms are quite vague but the prolonged nature of these symptoms regards to throat cancer. If it has been happening for a long time you need to consult a doctor immediately. Only a proper biopsy of the specific problematic cell can determine whether it is cancer.
Treatment:
• Surgery:
If the tumor is small and localized, surgery will often remove the tumor. This may have few side effects. If the tumor is advanced and has spread to surrounding areas, surgery will be extensive and may involve removal of parts of throat which may affect your ability to speak, breath, swallow and chew. Reconstructive surgery can help restore these effects.
• Radiation therapy:
It can be used as primary treatment for selected small tumors. It can also be used in combination with chemotherapy for advanced treatment.
• Chemotherapy:
It is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. For advanced tumors it is given in combination with radiation therapy.
